Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

As we announced last week, we have successfully migrated from Editgrid to Zoho Sheet for our Online Spreadsheet technology.

All your Online Spreadsheets have been exported and imported into the new format.

As a result of the change-over, there will be some functionality differentiations (many new feature gains):

Feature Gains

   1. Publishing Charts - Ability to "publish" charts from Online Spreadsheets into Central Desktop Online Docs, Wiki Pages, or any external website including your Blog. This means you can reference data contained in Central Desktop Online Spreadsheets and have it auto updated.

   2. Cell Autocomplete - Similar to when you type in Excel your cell data will auto-complete based on previous row content.

   3. Better Remote Data Range Support -
http://cd.centraldesktop.com/publicfiles/media/newsletter/zoho_external_data.png
      Zoho's better data range support

This is the ability to pull remote data into a single cell as well as update an entire range of cells with table/csv data every 15 minutes. Coupled with the publish charts feature and you have an extremely powerful tool for your business.

   4. Office 2007 Support for Excel file Imports - (XLSX file support).

   5. Macros and VBA Editor - For those advanced users out there who leverage Macros and write VB code in Excel file, you can now leverage this technology within our Online Spreadsheets. Click for more info on Macros.

   6. 3D Charts - Zoho has excellent support for 3D Charts.

   7. Embed Images - Ability to upload and insert images directly into spreadsheet from local computer.

Differences*

   1. No "Strike Through" Font support.
   2. No Native Find/Replace functionality (you can use your Browser find function instead)
   3. No Quick Sort View / Quick Auto Filter View
   4. Loss of SOME built in Remote Data objects. Editgrid supported a different set of remote data stores. Overall, though, Zoho has better remote data cell range support as noted above.

* Zoho Corporation is already aware of these feature differences and is working on providing us with a roadmap of when some of these (and other) features will be available in the future.

Known Issues During Conversion Process

   1. Existing Stike Through Fonts will revert to Standard Font format (without strike through)
   2. Hyperlinks will not be auto-linked (this is due to part of the migration process. Zoho DOES support automatic hyperlinks)
   3. Merged rows become unmerged, however merged columns stay merged.
   4. Frozen panes are not maintained during migration.
   5. Cell/Range Locks are not maintained during migration.

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

I couldn't figure out how to hide rows or columns?  Is this possible?

Also, I could change the column width...but the row height always reverted back to the original.

Thx!

I also could not figure out how to hide rows or columns.

I wanted to freeze panes the way we did before but zoho is telling me: "Freeze panes is not possible when there are merged cells in the current column." Any workarounds here?

I can't adjust the row height. Regardless of what I type into the row height it stays the same. Help! None of my forms print properly.

@icewraps - What browser are you using? I can't recreate this. Also, send a link to the sheet in question to support [at] centraldesktop.com, with all relevant details, so we can take a look.

@icewraps/Alex N : there is no "hide" rows/columns function in Zoho, currently.

@Alex N - Are these cells merged vertically? Can you unmerge the cells? It looks like cells merged vertically doesn't allow freezing panes.

@sharonyoung - What browser? Please send a link to support [at] centraldesktop.com, with all relevant details, and we'll take a look.

James, the cells are merged horizontally. The problem is that the spreadsheet has quite a few of merged cells. It worked fine with editgrid before to freeze, so hope that Zoho will be able to recreate this.

Hiding rows and columns would be a big benefit.

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

The bug with the freezed pane is a tricky one: In case you have merged horizontal cells (which is likely in bigger spreadsheets), you cannot freeze your pane vertically. So, you first need to unmerge all your cells. Then, there is another bug: If you forget just a few merged cells, Zoho surprisingly allows you to freeze the pane BUT the first cell to the left in the row below a merged cell disappears - it is just not accessible at all... Be careful, it took me some time to figure this out.

How can I hyperlink to a another sheet within the the same workbook? This was easily possible with editgrid and now all our hyperlinks are removed and I don't know how to set them up again?

We are experiencing that the collaboration feature is not always working, e.g. 2 people are in the same spreadsheet but don't see that somebody else is in else well. They don't get notified and don't see real-time changes.

We haven't been able to reproduce this error - are you able to? If one user, under the SAME account, has two instances of the spreadsheet open, one will not display changes made in the other. However, if there is another user on the spreadsheet, you should see their edits in real time.

No, we have had 2 users with DIFFERENT accounts logging into the same spreadsheet and edits could not been seen.

Win XP Prof / Firefox and Chrome. Yes, I am able to recreate, have tested it with a colleague earlier today.

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

Could you also please explain a bit how the "Zoho Feeds - History" works? We do get messages like this: cd_live_space_xxx has shared a document with you. What is this supposed to do? What is the value for the user?

I am not sure if I have missed a how-to manual on the new zoho spreadsheets. I tried to google for help on zoho sheets but could only find a forum and not a manual.

Please email support [at] centraldesktop.com and we'll organize some troubleshooting for the above issue.

cd_live_space_xxx has shared a document with you

We are in the process of disabling this message, and I think we'll be disabling the "Zoho Feeds" message, as well.

To my knowledge, there is no Manual for Zoho Sheet - If you have questions, you can post them on our Forum, or email support [at] centraldesktop.com.

Thanks James. Here is an open question on zoho sheet:

How can I hyperlink to a another sheet within the the same workbook? This was easily possible with editgrid and now all our hyperlinks are removed and I don't know how to set them up again?

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

It's not possible to hyperlink to another sheet in the same workbook - you can refer to a cell in another sheet like this: "=Sheet1.A1"

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

I'm having the same problem with row heights mentioned above -- no matter what I set, it keeps reverting to the height it has (and I'm not sure where that came from - it's not what I want or what it used to be).

I've tried changing by dragging on the row headers, and by typing in a different row height.  No matter which I use, it changes it momentarily, and then immediately changes it back to what it was.

Is there a fix for this? If you need a link to my spreadsheet, let me know.

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

There is another bug when freezing panes: rows are getting crashed, i.e. the columns left from the freezed pane are not at the same level as the ones right from the freezed pane, hence you cannot really work with the sheet...

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

James, I cannot refer to another sheet as you proposed: If I enter this, zoho automatically adds "http://"=sheet1.a1"/" and of course this link is not working.

Help, we really have problems working with all the online spreadsheets we set up in editgrid...  I understand that you needed to find a new provider but currently I cannot see the benefits of zoho. I hope that I will be able to see them soon...

Another bug: You currently cannot adjust row/column width in freezed panes areas.

Re: Nov 15, 2009 - Conversion from Editgrid to Zoho is Complete and Live.

Another item to consider: if you have text in a cell that is longer than the cell width, it is not displayed completely (in xls or editgrid this has been extended to the next cell in case that cell is empty). This is a good way to allow headers (as usually the neighboured cells are empty).

The only way in zoho is to wrap the text in the cell but this not really helpful if you want to work with headers/subheaders.

This is noted - the only workarounds are "wrap", expand the column, or merge cells. This feature is on our list.
