(Currently not available for the Mac)
What does it do and Why should I care?
Central Desktop Toolbar
Central Desktop for Office adds a new Central Desktop toolbar to Word, Excel and PowerPoint which allows you to interact with your files that are stored in Central Desktop workspaces.
Save Files to Central Desktop
Quickly save files directly to Central Desktop without having to upload. Simply click "Save As" from the Central Desktop toolbar and choose a location.
Open, Modify and Save
Open, modify and save files from any Central Desktop workspace directly from Word/Excel or PowerPoint without having to download and replace the file. No more "checkout/checkin/replace".
Co-Author Files
Allows multiple authors to simultaneously edit the SAME document at the SAME time directly from Word and Excel. If the file you are working on is modified by another user, you will be prompted to preview and merge the changes.
Note: Powerpoint coauthoring will be available in August.
Comment Files
Easily view and add Central Desktop file comments directly from Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Notify & Manage Subscribers
View, add, remove and notify subscribers to a document at anytime within Word, Excel or Powerpoint.
Organize Files/Folders
You can create new folders, and rearrange files/folders within the plugin.

How much does this Cost?
There will be a Free and Premium version of CD for Office.
During the Beta period the full Premium version will be available for Free. Beta is expected to last through July/Aug 2010.
The Free version will have open & save functionality.
The Premium version will contain all the other extended features such as Coauthoring, Commenting, Notification. The premium version is expected to cost ~$24/user/year, more details will follow.
How Stable is this Beta?
This is a pretty stable beta. We have been testing extensively, and have a good degree of confidence this is a very stable build. We are currently using this internally on production documents, and feel pretty comfortable with this release.
Other Things to Note
For existing documents in Central Desktop, currently you must open files from Word/Excel/Powerpoint if you want to just click the SAVE button. Otherwise you will need to "Save As". Within a few weeks you should be able to open them directly from Central Desktop and the file will automatically be stored in the proper location.
The CD Outlook plugin is also bundled with CD for Office. If you do not want to install the Outlook plugin you can uncheck that option on installation.
Enjoy the plugin, this is a SIGNIFICANT evolution in the Central Desktop product and platform.
Sincerely,
The Central Desktop Team

Getting this error message with one of my users, any tips? Tried downloading again twice, same errors.
"The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupt installation database."
Offline
Did you uninstall CD for Office before attempting to download again? You will also want to make sure all instances of Microsoft Office are closed before installation.

I'm getting "Invalid Credentials - please enter valid use name and password for your account". I logged out & back in to ensure they worked with the main site (they do). Customer = geopraxis, username = awaegel

Can you contact support [at] centraldesktop.com and reference this thread? From there, we will organize some troubleshooting.

Very nice so far. However, I have a rather large database and I upload (attach) quite a few documents to "files and discussions" under individual database records. I see that under the "open and search for files" sub-tab under the Central Desktop tab, I'm not able to drill down to the level of database records. As a matter of fact, I cannot even find the database there. Is this something you could work on?

Only the folders in 'Files & Discussions' are accessible via CD for Office. Your files attached to DB Records will be in the Attachments folder, and you can use the 'Search' box to find your files, as well. I have passed your feedback to our product team - thank you.

Been using this for a few weeks now, and generally, I love it. It is exactly what I need in my daily work.
For about a week and a half of this usage, however, I was unable to connect; continually had an error message that the plugin could not connect to Central Desktop. Without doing anything, at some point, it started working again. Not sure why.
My one ick, however, is the fact that it doesn't work for Mac. The whole point of us wanting to be on the Cloud and to work from the Cloud is access from wherever - meaning from any computer in the world. At home I work on a Mac - without Mac capabilities on the plugin, it kind of defeats the purpose of working at home.
This may be a problem for a lot of companies or departments that work a lot with multi-media, because typically these companies will be working on Apple Macintosh(or in some instances Unix).
Otherwise, I love the plugin's functions.

We develop these products for you. Great to hear!

Understood, We also want to see a Mac version. As you can imagine we need to address the 80% of the market before doing the rest. Mac is on the feature backlog, no eta yet, but we hear you and feel your pain.
Thanks for the feedback!

Do you have a MAC version available yet?

We do not have a Mac version yet, but this is on our Roadmap - we will announce any updates in this Forum.
