A few more changes to further support our WebDAV initiative have been released today:
1) System folders such as Trash, Attachments and Archive now support sub-folders. This means you can drag/move an entire folder tree into any of these folders and the tree will remain in tact. Restores from the Trash will become easier now.
2) File Uniquness is now in sync with what you would expect from any normal Operating System. Files must be unique to a folder, rather than a workspace. This should be in parity with Windows, Mac OSX, etc...
More details on WebDAV are forthcoming... Expect private beta to start in the coming weeks.
Quick update on User Interface release, we expect to have a sandbox environment in a few weeks (early Oct) with a public release a few weeks after that (end of Oct/early Nov)
As usual, please post your feedback and comments below.
Thanks,

Looking forward to WebDav
Also appreciate uniqueness to folder rather than workspace
May be prudent to have a checkbox on upload "check file unique to workspace" to avoid potential dupes, though a 3 on 1-10 scale for importance.

I agree with tsa on workspace uniqueness. I've come to rely on it for duplicate checking.
But webdav will be very nice.

On the flipside of alanbush's comment: frequently we WANT to be able to attach different files, with the same filename, to different database records. Here's why:
I'm sure we're not unique in that we use databases for repetitive business processes and data management; i.e. we have standard batch processes and systems which generate a standard set of information and files, which we use a CD database to manage. As a result, frequently the files attached to a database have the same filenames. This could apply to discussions as well, though I suspect it's more of an issue with how people are using databases. This new feature doesn't help because attachments are still all dumped into the Attachments folder; we still need to take the extra step of renaming files to ensure uniqueness.
An (imperfect) idea that comes to mind: provide an option to have CD automatically put database attachments into a unique subfolder (probably under the Attachments folder) for each record. There's probably a better idea out there...
If that is not feasible, then an alternate - and more generalized - request is to make it more convenient for the user to resolve duplicate filenames at the time of upload, right then and there, rather than just telling the user they need to go fix the problem and then come back try again. Because it is rather a pain to do so. Instead, how about letting them take care of the duplicate filename right then and there; perhaps present an option to store the file in a different folder, or upload with a different filename, right there in the upload dialog box.
Any one else having this challenge? Any good ideas out there?

We are looking into ways to better handle db attachments - thanks for your feedback.

When do they anticipate having db parent/child ready?

See our Roadmap - it is scheduled for Q4.

Question -- I've been impressed with the UI of Box.net for file management. Will the new CD release be along those lines? Thanks.
Offline
It will probably look more like box.net than it does now.

Is the plan to have web-folders? (if that's the right term?) Basically, having a folder on your Desktop with all drag/drop functionality?
Offline
Yes. web-folders = WebDAV.
We are gearing up for this - expect to see this this quarter.
